Sandtris

A physics-based Tetris game where blocks fall like sand and stack naturally.

Overview

Sandtris begins with recognizable falling shapes, then breaks the usual block-game rules as soon as a piece lands. Its cells separate into colored grains that fall through gaps, slide down slopes, and settle into an uneven pile. You are no longer preserving neat rectangular wells for a future piece; you are shaping loose terrain that keeps moving after contact.

The clearing rule is just as important as the sand simulation. A clear happens when a single connected color reaches from the left wall of the playfield to the right wall. That connection can snake upward or downward through the pile, so it does not need to occupy one straight horizontal row. The matching grains flash before the whole connected path disappears, opening cavities that make the remaining sand settle again. The display tracks time, cleared lines, score, difficulty, and the next piece. Difficulty rises as more paths are cleared, making later placements less forgiving. This combination turns a familiar falling-piece outline into a game about color continuity, slopes, and controlled avalanches rather than conventional row packing.

How to Play

Press Start, then use Left and Right to steer the falling shape. Up rotates it and Down performs a soft drop while adding to the score. Holding Shift or Control increases the sideways movement rate, which is useful when a piece starts far from its target, and P pauses the run. There is no Space hard drop in the current build.

On a phone or tablet, use the five on-screen buttons for rotate, faster movement, soft drop, left, and right. The game’s start screen explicitly supports mobile play, though the narrow field makes precise placement easier in landscape orientation. When a piece touches the pile it releases its colored grains. Keep placing pieces until one color forms an unbroken, edge-connected route between both side walls. Watch the next-piece preview before committing to a basin, because the color and orientation you need may be one turn away.

Tips & Strategy

Build outward from both walls instead of waiting for a conventional full row. A same-color cluster touching the left edge is half of a future clear; preserve it and look for a route toward matching sand on the right. Because the connection may bend, a shallow staircase is often more useful than a perfectly level band. Avoid burying an edge cluster under several other colors, since reconnecting it later requires clearing or routing around the obstruction.

Drop wide shapes over broad low areas when you want coverage, and use tall orientations to feed a narrow channel. Do not aim every piece at the deepest valley: repeated drops there can create a dense central mound that splits the colors on either side. Keep some low corridors open so grains can travel after an avalanche. The preview is especially valuable when the pile is high; place the current color where it extends an existing network, then reserve space for the next one. Use Down deliberately rather than automatically, because extra speed reduces the time available to correct an awkward approach. As difficulty climbs, favor simple wall-to-wall routes over elaborate chains—the clear itself creates fresh space and is safer than carrying several nearly completed colors near the top.

Frequently asked questions

How do you clear sand in Sandtris?

Connect one color of sand from the left wall to the right wall. The connected path may bend vertically; it does not need to form a straight horizontal row.

Does Sandtris work on mobile?

Yes. The current game provides on-screen buttons for rotation, faster movement, soft drop, left, and right controls, although the smaller playfield takes practice.

What are the keyboard controls for Sandtris?

Use Left and Right to steer, Up to rotate, and Down to soft-drop. Shift or Control increases sideways movement speed, and P pauses the game.
